Nursery & Reception

The Foundation Stage focuses on the distinct needs of children aged three to five (end of the Reception Year). In Nursery and Reception children work towards Early Learning Goals in six areas of learning through topic based activities. The curriculum recognizes the fact that children develop in different ways and at different rates and it sets out the goals that most children are expected to achieve by the end of the Reception Year. The curriculum is delivered through planned play activities in Nursery and more structured learning introduced gradually in Reception where children are learning through more formal activities during the Literacy Hour and the Numeracy Hour. By the end of the Reception Year children should have a wide range of social skills. In literacy they should know the alphabet, link the letters and sounds, and read a range of common words. In numeracy they should count reliably up to 20, recognize numbers and add and subtract up to 10. Creative development and building an image of self as confident and competent learner is emphasized throughout the curriculum.
Personal, social and emotional development
Successful personal, social and emotional development is critical for very young children in all aspects of their lives and gives them the best opportunity for success in all other areas of learning. It is crucial that settings provide the experiences and support to enable children to develop a positive sense of themselves.
